Buyer's Guide

Pallet Racking Selection Guide: Which System Fits Your Warehouse?

Procurement teams often compare quotes for different racking types without a common baseline. Use this engineering comparison to shortlist systems before requesting a layout study.

Comparison of pallet storage systems by density, selectivity and stock rotation
SystemStorage densityDirect access to palletsStock rotationBest suited for
Selective pallet rackingMedium100% of palletsAny (FIFO / LIFO)Many SKUs, few pallets per SKU, mixed distribution centres
Drive-in / drive-throughHighPer laneLIFO (drive-in) / FIFO (drive-through)Homogeneous products, cold storage, seasonal stock
Push-back rackingHighPer lane, front faceLIFOMedium-turnover SKUs with several pallets each
Pallet flow rackingHighPer laneFIFOPerishables, production buffers, strict lot control
Pallet shuttle systemVery highPer laneFIFO or LIFOHigh volumes per SKU, deep lanes, frozen goods
Mobile pallet rackingVery high100% (one aisle opened)AnyExpensive floor space, cold rooms, lower movement rates
Automated warehouse (AS/RS)Very high100%, automaticAny, software-controlledHigh throughput, tall buildings, 24/7 operations

Density and access ratings are indicative. Final performance depends on pallet dimensions, load weight, building clear height, handling equipment and throughput, which our engineers validate in every project study.

FAQ

Questions Buyers Ask Before Investing in Warehouse Storage

Straight answers from our project engineers to help procurement, operations and finance teams align early.

How do I choose the right pallet racking system?

Start with four variables: number of SKUs, pallets per SKU, required stock rotation (FIFO or LIFO) and building clear height. Selective racking suits many SKUs with direct access to every pallet; drive-in, push-back, pallet flow and pallet shuttle systems suit fewer SKUs with many pallets each; mobile racking and automated warehouses maximise density where floor space is limited.

What load capacity can industrial racking support?

Capacity is calculated per project. It depends on upright and beam profiles, beam span, first-level height, number of levels, seismic zone and floor slab. Each installation is engineered for your declared pallet weight and dimensions, and load signs should be displayed on every rack.

Do you supply projects outside Europe?

Yes. Our commercial network covers more than 70 countries, with offices in 23 countries, 12 production centres and 7 R&D centres supporting projects from design and manufacturing to installation and lifecycle services.

Can an existing warehouse be automated?

In many cases, yes. Pallet shuttles, AMRs, conveyors and miniload systems can be integrated into existing buildings. A feasibility study reviews clear height, floor flatness, fire protection and throughput targets before a solution is recommended.

What information should I prepare for a proposal?

A building layout with clear height, pallet or box dimensions and weights, number of SKUs, daily inbound and outbound movements, handling equipment in use and your growth forecast. This lets engineers propose an accurate layout and budget from the first round.

Which software does an automated warehouse need?

A typical architecture combines a WMS for stock and orders, a WES to orchestrate tasks and resources, and a WCS to drive automated equipment. A DOM selects the best fulfilment location across a network of warehouses and distribution centres.
